Nurturing Innovation: Element Logic Internship Program 2024

Building on the success of previous years, the summer internship program at Element Logic has once again demonstrated its value, with nine talented students stepping up to the challenge. This year, the program took a more focused approach, aligning closely with Element Logic’s core business. Unlike previous years, where topics like vertical farming were explored, the 2024 program had two groups working on cases directly related to the company’s core solutions for warehouse industry. Both groups worked on solving picking errors and had a unique opportunity to make a tangible impact in the warehouse industry.

First team – verifying the order

The first group focused on addressing the costly return process many e-commerce companies face due to picking errors caused by human mistakes and accumulating errors within the AutoStore system. The financial implications of these errors were estimated by the students based on many factors, such as the cost of sending a customer an additional order, customer support related to the error, extra packaging, handling of the returned item, any potential compensation for the error and more. The students tested various models to identify items and estimate volumes accurately. With the insights during the research phase, the students came up with the unofficial name, eVerification, a solution working together with AutoStore, eManager, eLogiq and other products to verify the picking process. The team carefully evaluated the cost savings of their solution against its accuracy and pricing, offering Element Logic valuable insights into optimizing bin picking processes.

Second team – correcting the order

The second group focused on enhancing the picking process by correcting errors by using an automized quality control (QC) solution with help from Element Logic’s own solutions including the material handling hardware, Omnimod. The result was a prototype that the students chose to unofficially call eCorrector. This included a software that used the Omnimod solution as a QC station and their testing of the solution revealed 7,5 times less time consuming than the existing workflow. The solution also included a user-friendly user interface that was designed for an easy and stress-free correction of the error. Their work also revealed that the prototype could be used for more than just reducing picking errors; it holds potential for adding value in various other aspects of operations as well.

Synergy Between Solutions

One of the key takeaways from this year’s internship is the potential for synergy between the different prototypes. The students discovered that these concepts could be integrated into a comprehensive solution, offering even greater benefits to Element Logic’s product portfolio.

A Highly Competitive Program

The popularity of the internship program was evident, with around 100 applications received without any formal advertising—a testament to the program’s reputation and the valuable experience it offers. This year’s participants, including two who had interned in previous years, brought a fresh perspective and impressive dedication to their work.

Shaping the Future of Element Logic

The insights and innovations generated by this year’s interns will undoubtedly contribute to Element Logic’s continued growth and success. As always, the internship program not only provides students with hands-on experience but also injects fresh ideas into the company, helping to maintain its position at the forefront of the industry. The collaboration between Element Logic and educational institutions through this program continues to be a vital component in the race for top talent, ensuring that the company stays ahead in an increasingly competitive market.
